From SpiderIsland: Rusty Tucker

Sysops: Ken Sutherland, mikael fredriksson, Jim Smith, Bill Gram-Reefer, Jim Leary, Bob Wright,

Rusty Tucker : hola!
Ken Sutherland joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Ken!
Ken Sutherland : hello?
Rusty Tucker Hiya -- Daryl says that the Mail PI is starting to progress again, that's good!
Ken Sutherland : we found a memory leak
Ken Sutherland : wee 1
Jim Smith joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker : Welcome to the chat Jim!
Ken Sutherland : hi Jim
Jim Smith : Hi all;)
Ken Sutherland : Rusty, exactly how do these scripts work
Ken Sutherland : the welcome etc.
Ken Sutherland : I cant find detailed explanation anywhere?
Rusty Tucker : They get an apple event from TeleFinder, and react to it.
Rusty Tucker : yes, its documented within the sample scripts.
Ken Sutherland : do you need server scripts running
Rusty Tucker : nope
Ken Sutherland : ahh
Ken Sutherland : oops
Ken Sutherland : as server 5.7 isn't quite finished I have a new feature request please
Rusty Tucker : :)
Ken Sutherland : can we have a proxy server please, the same as WebStars v3
Rusty Tucker why not use something like web doubler?
Ken Sutherland : ha ha
Ken Sutherland : why not a TF product, keep it in the family
Ken Sutherland : also DNS would be nice
Ken Sutherland : how about a firewall
Rusty Tucker : hmmm...
Jim Smith : Rusty: New Win TF user windows look very good:-)
Rusty Tucker : Thanks! Win95 opens things up a bit compared to win 3.1
Jim Smith : The About Box is kind of bland, compared to MacOS.
Rusty Tucker : The next step is to have it 'self install' ( Start menu, ini items etc. )
Ken Sutherland : Rusty, with the new win client are we going to c the backgrounds and icons featured?
Ken Sutherland : i.e. 1 setting file for all
Rusty Tucker : that's on the back burner at the moment
Ken Sutherland : well heat it up then
Ken Sutherland : if you want to impress over 50% of new users now you have a reason to include it
Rusty Tucker : nobody is doing settings files ( that I've seen ) any more, so why bother?
Jim Smith : Rusty: Carbon reports that all my OT call are not supported, what is the deal?
Ken Sutherland : you would increase TF awareness in windows land
Rusty Tucker : Don't know yet Jim. I don't see how to get there from here given the missing pieces....
Rusty Tucker : All IO is up in the air right now.
mikael fredriksson joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker : Welcome to the chat mikael!
mikael fredriksson : Hi!
Rusty Tucker : But for networking, sockets is the way to go.
Bill Gram-Reefer joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker : Welcome to the chat Bill!
Ken Sutherland : hello
Jim Smith : What is that? (sockets)
Bill Gram-Reefer : hi all
Rusty Tucker : BTW - check out the new TeleFinder User, now supports "Navigation Services". Much better than the old Standard file.
Ken Sutherland : I'll be right back!
mikael fredriksson : RT b12 is cool!
Rusty Tucker : sockets are what the rest of the world uses as an API for TCP-IP.
Bill Gram-Reefer : are we talking about streaming vs. sockets in new OS networking?
Rusty Tucker : kinda
Jim Leary joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker : Welcome to the chat Jim!
Rusty Tucker : ( sockets are still "streaming" )
Ken Sutherland : Welcome to the Chat Room chat Jim Leary!
Jim Leary : Hello
Jim Smith : Is there anything written up on sockets, if so, where.
Rusty Tucker : any UNIX book will do
Rusty Tucker : or the current Rhapsody docs I guess too
Rusty Tucker : Rhapsody has always used sockets
Rusty Tucker : You like the Navigation services Mikael?
mikael fredriksson : Yes
Jim Smith : Socket, Plug-in, all these buzz words ;-&
Rusty Tucker : I implemented it in TeleFinder using Navigation wrapper I wrote. I'm getting the wrapper cleaned up now to release as free source.
Rusty Tucker : Also, did everyone get the news on the BIAP chat beta release? Its fixes the 'restart' problem in TeleFinder.
mikael fredriksson : It was in my mailbox
Ken Sutherland : come on Rusty, you didn't answer my proxy server request
Ken Sutherland : 8)
Ken Sutherland : PLEAZZZZE
Rusty Tucker : yes I did:) Maybe my BOT filtered it out.
Rusty Tucker : You can use Web Doubler as a proxy if you need one.
Rusty Tucker : why do you want one anyway?
Jim Leary : RT, I downloaded MacsBug-6.5.4a1.sit, put it in the sys folder and when I tried to reboot kept getting a "system error type 11" and couldn't get the computer to boot
Jim Leary : ammm. what do I do?
Ken Sutherland : if I'm going to allow dialup access via my feed a proxy may reduce feed load , oe so I have been
Rusty Tucker : JL - get 654.a4, its in sysop files/ misc.
Ken Sutherland : also DNS Pro is nearly $900
Jim Leary : I didn't put the debugger or preference anywhere. Is that why. It said to put the pref in Macsbug pref file and there wasn't one. Same with debugger
Rusty Tucker : KS - you need something like net-doubler then its a caching proxy
Rusty Tucker : just 900? sounds cheap to me
Ken Sutherland : well its £899uk
Rusty Tucker : Their Web Page says $290!
Ken Sutherland : typical UK sales agent, screw the customer
Rusty Tucker : just buy direct from Men&Mice
Ken Sutherland : that reminds me, I need to give Steve a call 8-)
Ken Sutherland : just got my rhapsody dr2, is it any good yet?
Rusty Tucker : JL - where are the files, and what OS version u running?
Ken Sutherland : need to go, have a good weekend, night
Rusty Tucker : MacsBug should be loose in the system folder.
Ken Sutherland left the chat.
Rusty Tucker : c-ya Ken Sutherland
Jim Leary : MacsBug itself was loose in there
Bob Wright joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker : Welcome to the chat Bob!
Jim Leary : I'll try the other one you suggested
Jim Leary : but do I have to wait for the reboot to place the prefs and debugger stuff
Rusty Tucker : I don't have any prefs folder, I think u may need the newer version to work with current MacOS vers..
Jim Leary : or do I put those in the general prefs folder? because there is no Macsbug prefs folder
Jim Leary : OK I have 8.1 and I'll try the new one. Thanks
Bob Wright : as sysop, how do I "hide" myself when I login using the Windows client or is that a feature that is not available?
Rusty Tucker : close the door and turn out the lights :)
Bob Wright : hahaha..!
Rusty Tucker : I wouldn't want anyone seeing me either :)
Rusty Tucker : I don't think hiding is a Mac feature either.
Jim Leary : Inside of this new MacsBug there are folders which include "into MacsBug Preferences folder". My question is how do I place this if the folder doesn't exist? Same with Debugger????
Bob Wright : RT: You used to be able to login holding the apple key and no one would see you online.....right?
Rusty Tucker : hmm, does that work?
Bob Wright : RT: it used to work...I heard about the feature from YOU ;)
Rusty Tucker : Just put MacsBugs loose into the system folder, ditto MacsBugs preferences folder.
Bob Wright : I just have not used it in a while, and wanted to start using it on the windows machine
Rusty Tucker : I don't know if it is still a hack or not.
Jim Leary : there is no MacsBug Prefs folder
Rusty Tucker : we have the "available for chat" feature now
Jim Leary : Never mind, those other 2 things say optional
Bob Wright : RT: oh it was a hack? I thought you had made it a feature less than a year ago
Rusty Tucker : if you don't see it in the docs, its a hack. I think we finally settled on the "Available for Chat" feature. And it was at least a couple years ago -- OLD MAN :)
Rusty Tucker : So, BW - how do you like TeleFinder User 4 for win?
Bob Wright : RT: haha....Chris has been gone for two years?
Rusty Tucker : maybe it only seems that way...
Jim Leary left the chat.
Rusty Tucker : c-ya Jim Leary
Bob Wright : RT: I am using TFUser 4.0 now on my other machine and it seems to be working good.
Bob Wright : But I have something set up wrong in my server or something is wrong with TFUser Win 4.0 that I cant figure out
Rusty Tucker : cool, if you set it to Thousands of Colors, you'll get better sort shading.
Bob Wright : I have "OK Alias" for a folder, inside the folder I have a files area. The TFUser 4.0 Win version wont let me upload to that files area.
Bob Wright : I have not checked the Mac version to see if it can do it or not
Rusty Tucker : probably not then.
Rusty Tucker : If there is a crossed out pencil in the window, you can't upload there.
Bob Wright : That's just it -- the pencil is NOT crossed out
Rusty Tucker : So what happens when you try to upload?
Bill Gram-Reefer left the chat.
Rusty Tucker : c-ya Bill Gram-Reefer
Bob Wright : I cant -- the menu choice "Upload File" is grayed out
Rusty Tucker : That's the wrong command.
Bob Wright : I mean "upload to " is grayed out
Rusty Tucker : Oh, make sure the window is in front.
Bob Wright : Also, I tried to send the file from 4.0 Win as an attachment and it did not send. It said it sent, but when I logged in on the Mac, I had NOTHING
Bob Wright : Yes, I am a four year user of TeleFinder -- the window is in the front :)
Rusty Tucker : :) maybe its setup as a Topic area then?
Bob Wright : hmm..lemme check
Rusty Tucker : didn't mean to change anything about the attachments.. lemme try
Bob Wright : Well, here is a 4.0 problem: I just used the wrong password several times, and it never removed the "host alert" dialogue box between each wrong connection.
Rusty Tucker : No, it doesn't clear that automagically
Bob Wright : and DUH..I had the darn area set up as a topic area....I am a BIG dummy :)
Rusty Tucker : Something is wrong with the attachments though..
Bob Wright : well, now it wont let me log in at all...keep telling me my password is wrong, and I no it ain't
Bob Wright : weird, UM quit for no reason right after I check the access group of the folder area
Bob Wright : that was my fault, too...accidently hit command-q instead of command-s
Bob Wright : but I am quite sure the attachment thing is broken
Rusty Tucker : me too
Bob Wright : ok, no pencil is marked out...window is in front..folder is set to FILES area, and the menu is still grayed out
Bob Wright : I don't know where it puts the files when its sent, but I cant find it
Rusty Tucker : check the "hidden path" too
Bob Wright : last statement is referring to the attachment problem
Bob Wright : that is what I first said: I have a folder called UPLOADS where I have "OK FOR ALIAS" path..inside is a PUBLIC FOLDER which I can see, but can not upload to
Rusty Tucker : I'll be right back!
Bob Wright : ok
Bob Wright : me, too...I will BRB
Bob Wright left the chat.
Rusty Tucker : c-ya Bob Wright
Jim Smith left the chat.
Rusty Tucker : c-ya Jim Smith
Bob Wright joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker : Welcome to the chat Bob!
Bob Wright : RT: I can upload to that folder with the Mac version, but not the Windows 4.0 version
Rusty Tucker : OK -
Rusty Tucker : so how do I go about replicating that here?
Bob Wright : wanna log onto my system and see it for yourself?
Rusty Tucker : no, I need to set it up here
Rusty Tucker : I can setup the "UPLOADS" path.
Rusty Tucker : and Public Folder.
Rusty Tucker : but how do you see public folder to begin with?
Bob Wright : well, I have a folder called PEIC which has a path set up as "OK FOR ALIAS" ..inside is a folder called UPLOADS..inside of UPLOADS is a folder called "Public Files" ...Public files wont let me upload to with Win but will with Mac
Rusty Tucker : must have an alias somewhere?
Bob Wright : yet I can see both with either version.
Rusty Tucker : hmm, if you have a path marked "OK for alias" it should not show up on the desktop
Rusty Tucker : Does PEIC show up on the desktop?
Rusty Tucker : is your system on the Internet?
Bob Wright : The PEIC folder does not show up on the desktop, but I have a path to the folders INSIDE of the PEIC folder which show up
Rusty Tucker : maybe I should login
Bob Wright : Yes, the system is on the internet....206.241.104.2
Rusty Tucker : IM me a name and password
Bob Wright : ok..just a second
Rusty Tucker : I'm in
Rusty Tucker : OK - see Uploads on the desktop
Bob Wright : go to UPLOADS..then choose Public Files
Rusty Tucker : how did that get there?
Bob Wright : yes, UPLOADS is a path..
Bob Wright : UPLOADS is a folder inside of PEIC
Rusty Tucker : I don't see PEIC
Bob Wright : PEIC has been set up as an alias
Rusty Tucker : What are the path settings for Uploads?
Rusty Tucker : forget about PEIC
Bob Wright : path settings?
Bob Wright : Hard Drive:Desktop Folder:PEIC:Uploads
Rusty Tucker : Uploads is setup as a Conference.
Rusty Tucker : There is a path for it in the access group
Bob Wright : yes, Uploads is set up as a conference...
Rusty Tucker : The OK for Alias path is just confusing this all. I don't know why you need that.
Rusty Tucker : If its a Conference, you're not supposed to be able to upload to it.
Bob Wright : the PEIC folder is outside of the TeleFinder folder...I thought in that case I had to have an alias
Rusty Tucker : Yes, if you have aliases to items in the PEIC folder, you need that.
Rusty Tucker : Why is uploads a Conference?
Bob Wright : no conference even though the folder inside is not set up as a conference?
Bob Wright : I have PATHS to items in the PEIC folder....
Bob Wright : I can switch Uploads to a files area..must be a mistake with that access group
Rusty Tucker : yes, that will fix it
Rusty Tucker : > I have PATHS to items in the PEIC folder....
Bob Wright : still odd how I can do it with the Mac, but not the win...lemme try now :)
Rusty Tucker : Then you don't need to Setup PEIC as OK for Alias.
Rusty Tucker : well, the Mac s/w doesn't care if its a conference or not. Is that right or wrong? I'm not sure.
Bob Wright : I must have been misunderstanding how to use ok for alias...I thought anything outside of the TeleFinder folder had to first be an alias
Rusty Tucker : Maybe we made it OK to upload files to Conferences?
Bob Wright : it works now :)
Bob Wright : I guess the Mac s/w does not care..it let me do it
mikael fredriksson left the chat.
Rusty Tucker : c-ya mikael fredriksson
Bob Wright : now I am all confused on when to use ALIAS...is it in the docs?
Rusty Tucker : No. Anything outside of the PATHs, that a Finder Alias points to is not usable unless you make an Invisible "OK for Alias" path.
Bob Wright : If I point to a path outside of the TeleFinder folder, it wont work unless I ALSO have an ALIAS to that area
Rusty Tucker : nope
Rusty Tucker : You can make a PATH anywhere.
Rusty Tucker : you only need OK for Alias when you use Finder Aliases in the BBS
Bob Wright : well, I am quite sure when you first added that feature, and I made a PATH to the UPLOADS folder, it would not appear on my desktop unless I ALSO made an alias to the PEIC folder
Rusty Tucker : I don't think so, unless it was a weird bug
Bob Wright : please hold, I am trying it now
Bob Wright : well, I took away the alias I had to PEIC, and I can still see everything so I guess it works, but I swear it did not some time ago
Bob Wright : I understand now about FINDER aliases.....
Rusty Tucker : Hey, I guess that its it for today then!
Rusty Tucker : Have a nice weekend
Bob Wright : don't forget about the attachments
Bob Wright : have a GREAT weekend :)
Rusty Tucker : its written down :)
Rusty Tucker : bye
