Text of TeleFinder Chat from Friday, May 15, 1998 11 AM PDT.
In attendance:
From SpiderIsland: Rusty Tucker
Sysops: mikael fredriksson, Bob Nunn, Jim Smith, Jim Leary
Rusty Tucker hola!
Jim Smith : lo Bob, Rusty
Jim Smith : I messed that up.
Bob Nunn : Hey!
Rusty Tucker hi
Bob Nunn : I installed the new server this morning on
Headgap. Still haven't put up the MS yet the download was bad and I
will have to get it again. Perhaps dl with b9 will help?
Rusty Tucker reports on "B15" have been very goo.
Rusty Tucker yep
Bob Nunn : Will keep the logs for you. Haven't had any
problem so far.
Rusty Tucker no more problems with file corruption or "missing
icons"
Bob Nunn : Now if I could just get FileMaker to quit crashing
my system I would be in pretty good shape. Never got any response for
those boys but they were reorganizing I suspect.
mikael fredriksson joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat mikael!
mikael fredriksson : Hi!
Bob Nunn : Will 8.2 be out pretty soon?
Rusty Tucker Need to get the transfer log into TeleFinder User
and we should be ready
Rusty Tucker 8.5 is scheduled for Fall
Rusty Tucker ( allegro )
Bob Nunn : Haven't had time to read the news much lately.
Rusty Tucker I've got Optional "upload here" working now.
Jim Smith : Look like MacOS it it...:)
Rusty Tucker Check out www.spiderisland.com/fatw/ for
condensed news
Biloxi SunHerald joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Biloxi!
Bob Nunn : Do we still have hopes for a forward button one of
those days?
Biloxi SunHerald left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya Biloxi SunHerald
Rusty Tucker -- just the important stuff for sysops and web
masters
Bob Nunn : Good deal will check out the page.
mikael fredriksson : I m watching a cool QT movie from WWDC
about future plans on Mac OS in 1998
http://isocket.gxz.com/movies/100.mov
Rusty Tucker The WWDC theater was real good. I wish they'd get
the presenters slides up on the web tho.
Rusty Tucker You need to install QT3 for the movies.
Rusty Tucker The only thing I don't like about QT3 is that it
keeps asking me about translating files!
Rusty Tucker I haven't found a place to turn that off.
Rusty Tucker It's really stupid when it asks me to translate a
file I'm choosing to link to an access group :)
Bob Nunn : Me neither. Sometimes being helpful is too
helpful.
Rusty Tucker The Win32 port is coming along well. The major
item left to do is QuickTime..
Rusty Tucker Seems that apple doesn't have a compatible lib
for QT2, and their QT3 stuff is not posted yet ( for windows ).
mikael fredriksson : I downloaded all (at the same time) the
movies I wanted to watch found the directory were they was
http://isocket.gxz.com/movies/
Bob Nunn : I wish they had a stripped down version for just
the basics. That file is whopping. Makes it tough to give someone a
couple a disks to install a client.
Bob Nunn : Zips still ain't cheap enough to go passing
out.
Rusty Tucker You can do CD's cheaper than zips these days.
mikael fredriksson : BN CDR's?
Rusty Tucker I saw some < $1 for recordables
Bob Nunn : Yep. We do that corporately. I haven't bought one
for my personal use yet.
Rusty Tucker Shall we dig into Log Files today?
mikael fredriksson : yes why not... ;)
Rusty Tucker Though I'd go into tracing an email through the
Mail Server log.
Rusty Tucker Here's a clip from today..
Rusty Tucker 5/15/98 12:54:54 AM (SMTP Server2) Connected to
mail.rapidsite.net [207.158.192.62] 5/15/98 12:54:54 AM (SMTP
Server2) Got HELO as mail.rapidsite.net 5/15/98 12:54:55 AM (SMTP
Server2) Got MAIL FROM 5/15/98 12:54:55 AM
(SMTP Server2) Got TO RCPT 5/15/98
12:54:56 AM (SMTP Server2) Good recipient 5/15/98 12:54:56 AM (SMTP
Server2) Got DATA 5/15/98 12:54:57 AM (SMTP Server2) Successfully
received message
Rusty Tucker This shows Mail Server receiving a message via
SMTP over the Internet.
Rusty Tucker The key items are
Rusty Tucker the connection, the "HELO" ( hello ), MAIL FROM ,
and TO RCPT
Bob Nunn left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya Bob Nunn
Rusty Tucker then DATA ( actual message transfer ) then
success!
Bob Nunn joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Bob!
Rusty Tucker The Hello identifies the remote server.
Rusty Tucker However, Mail Server uses TCP info to identify
the remote. That's important for filtering.
Rusty Tucker like :
Rusty Tucker 5/15/98 12:36:23 AM (SMTP Server) Got HELO as
melusine.mpl.orstom.fr 5/15/98 12:36:33 AM (SMTP Server) Got MAIL
FROM 5/15/98 12:36:33 AM (SMTP Server) Got
TO RCPT 5/15/98 12:36:33 AM (SMTP
Server) Delivery rejected - will not route for this client's IP
address.
Rusty Tucker we don't route for non-tfnet, non local
addresses.
Rusty Tucker and "bisnet.tfnet.org" is no longer valid.
Rusty Tucker TO RCPT
Rusty Tucker identifies who the message should be delivered
to.
Rusty Tucker It has NOTHING to do with the "To:" header in the
message.
Rusty Tucker That's a common misconception.
Rusty Tucker That's how you can get mail addressed like "To:
evangelist-digest@public.lists.apple.com"
Rusty Tucker Finally, the client closes the connection like
this:
Rusty Tucker 5/15/98 12:37:42 AM (SMTP Server) Got QUIT
5/15/98 12:37:47 AM (SMTP Server) Connection closed
Rusty Tucker I'll be right back!
Rusty Tucker The next thing to look for is one of the gateways
picking up the message and routing it.
Rusty Tucker in this case it will be my Internet gateway.
Rusty Tucker 5/15/98 12:54:58 AM (Internet) Read msg from
webmaster@bolivianet.com
Rusty Tucker Then you'll see the gateway write the message
Rusty Tucker 5/15/98 12:54:58 AM (netmail) Write msg to
bolivianet@netmail.tfnet.org
Rusty Tucker In this case its the "netmail" TFNet gateway
Rusty Tucker When email goes to the local bbs it looks like
this:
Rusty Tucker 5/15/98 12:34:06 AM (SMTP Server) Connected to
email.starnine.com [198.211.93.6] 5/15/98 12:34:07 AM (SMTP
Server) Got HELO as email.starnine.com 5/15/98 12:34:07 AM (SMTP
Server) Got MAIL FROM 5/15/98
12:34:07 AM (SMTP Server) Got TO RCPT
5/15/98 12:34:09 AM (SMTP Server) Good recipient 5/15/98 12:34:09 AM
(SMTP Server) Got DATA 5/15/98 12:34:10 AM (SMTP Server) Successfully
received message 5/15/98 12:34:10 AM (Internet) Read msg from
"WebSTAR-dev Control Address"
5/15/98 12:34:11 AM (Local BBS) Write mail msg to
rustyt@spiderisland.com 5/15/98 12:34:12 AM (Local BBS POP3) Write
msg to rustyt@spiderisland.com 5/15/98 12:34:25 AM (SMTP Server) Got
QUIT 5/15/98 12:34:26 AM (SMTP Server) Connection closed
Rusty Tucker You'll notice that the Local BBS actually
delivers the mail even before the SMTP connection shuts down!
Rusty Tucker That's some rockin' multithreading at work!
Rusty Tucker Since I get my mail in POP3 format, the delivery
line appears 2x
Rusty Tucker Even though I get just one message
Rusty Tucker This is very handy when users claim a message was
not delivered.
Bob Nunn left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya Bob Nunn

Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Bob!
Rusty Tucker It's important to note that Mail Server's SMTP
client "burns" its way through connectivity failures without losing
the message.
Rusty Tucker When we're the client, we send the hello's MAIL
FROMs etc.
Rusty Tucker Its possible to do more than one message per
connection, this speeds up the email, and that's how Mail Server does
it.
Rusty Tucker Any questions about that?
Jim Leary joined the chat.
Rusty Tucker Welcome to the chat Jim!
Rusty Tucker Here's a sample from the log when I deliver

Rusty Tucker I had a tech question today about "Musashi" not
working with TeleFinder.
Rusty Tucker The answer to the question will be revealed by a
look in the Mail Server log files.
Jim Leary left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya Jim Leary
Rusty Tucker I'll be right back!
Rusty Tucker OK - I'm back.
Rusty Tucker That should be enough about log files for one
sitting :)
Rusty Tucker A lot of times the trick is just weeding out the
"gateway" specific lines to see what a given gateway is doing.
Rusty Tucker Any other questions before we wrap up for
today?
Bob Nunn : Not from me. I do hope you have a good log today
my connection is still on the fritz
Rusty Tucker Yes, I'm logging
Bob Nunn : MIS boys been messin with the farwall agin.
Bob Nunn : See ya Tues. Bye
Bob Nunn left the chat.
Rusty Tucker c-ya Bob Nunn
Rusty Tucker See ya all next week
