TeleFinder Chat from Tuesday, December 15, 1998 11 AM PST.
In attendance:
From Spider Island: Rusty
Tucker
Sysops: Donald
McHose,
Bob Nunn,
Jim Leary,
Mikael
Fredriksson
Rusty Tucker: hola!
Rusty Tucker: I'm on the PC, so I
won't have a log
Donald McHose: Howdy!
Rusty Tucker: Guess that should
be my next project :)
Bob Nunn: I have mine up if I
don't crash.
Rusty Tucker: actually, I just
put 851 in, so I should test out my script
Rusty Tucker: BRB
Donald McHose: Ahh..what's a
851?
Rusty Tucker: hola!
Rusty Tucker: there we go
Bob Nunn: System OS8.5.1
Donald McHose: Grin ;-)
Rusty Tucker: 851 is supposed to
fix the AppleScript bug, so lets see! :)
Rusty Tucker: The next server
release ( today ? ) will add a new wrinkle to the #dir_list spml
command.
Donald McHose: Bob how are your
iMacs doing now?
Bob Nunn: ok
Donald McHose: Like what RT?
Rusty Tucker: just a sec
Rusty Tucker: here we go...
Rusty Tucker: <!-- #comment
new for v5.7.1, the dir_list can hide specified names ( using
wildcards ) -->
<!-- #config dir_hidden="homepage.*" -->
Rusty Tucker: This is useful when
using the #dir_list command in a homepage
Rusty Tucker: you can excluded
homepage from the listing, or the templates folder
Donald McHose: ok. Nice
Rusty Tucker: <!-- #config
dir_hidden="templates" -->
Rusty Tucker: or all gifs
Rusty Tucker: <!-- #config
dir_hidden="*.gif" -->
Rusty Tucker: as it is now,
certain exclusions are hard coded
Rusty Tucker: all files that
start with "." or ""
Rusty Tucker: I will probably
take that out in favor of the SPML based exclusions
Rusty Tucker: Any comments on the
new address book features?
Bob Nunn: Took me a while to
figure out that it actually worked. My book is large and the entry of
course goes to the bottom initially. Like it though.
Donald McHose: Not right now ,
but will probably have some questions after the weekend.
Bob Nunn: I haven't had any
reports back yet on the new TFUBeta for Windoze. My main tester is
trying to recover their drive again ;-)
Bob Nunn: I guess you just should
buy a new machine once a year......???
Donald McHose: RT: What did ya
think of the TF symbol. I'll be loading the new TFu for Win Beta in
the am.
Rusty Tucker: it will resort them
when you reopen the address book
Donald McHose: Hell they replace
our IBM's every two years !
Bob Nunn: Yup figured it. Knew
that actually. I just didn't think and put the same entry in about 10
times thinking it wasn't working. Typical user brained.
Bob Nunn: BRB
Rusty Tucker: yep, I should have
that resort automatically when new entries are added
Bob Nunn: If possible. Not a
biggy but some would have the same trouble I had I would think.
Bob Nunn: Sometime in the next
few I will be demoing the latest TF Mac version for the user group
again. Will get to show off many of the new features. Nice being able
to let folks see these things first hand.
Donald McHose: is there
documentation ( on the new address book functions)in the down load? +
Did you hear from Jon and company if it was a problem with the mail
PI?
Rusty Tucker: anyone gonna be at
Macworld?
Bob Nunn: Wish I had the time and
the money. Would love to go.
Donald McHose: Not till they host
it in Charlotte NC ;-)
Donald McHose: On a Sat
afternoon
Rusty Tucker: Welcome to the chat
mikael!
mikael fredriksson: Hi!
Donald McHose: Are you going
Rusty?
Rusty Tucker: I think I will, no
booth
Donald McHose: Well give NET
PROF. mag. a calling card !
Bob Nunn: Just hanging ain't bad.
You get to enjoy the show more. Ever though about sharing a booth or
grabbing a corner in someone's?
Rusty Tucker: Han Haakman and
Steve Messimeer have said they want to have a get together there
Rusty Tucker: Welcome to the chat
Jim!
Donald McHose: Would love to join
ya'll..oh well.
Jim Leary: RT are you going to
display TF at MacWorld on the West Coast?
Rusty Tucker: no $ for that
:(
Jim Leary: sorry to hear
that...thought you might get to do it out there
Rusty Tucker: But I'm planning to
go there for a couple days
Jim Leary: one week at that could
make a difference
Bob Nunn: Perhaps you could get
your jacket emblazoned with ask me about the best Mac BBS/Web
Server.
Jim Leary: I think a booth would
have been a bit more effective
Rusty Tucker: c-ya mikael
fredriksson
Rusty Tucker: Will you be out for
expo Jim?
Donald McHose: Did ANY ONE ever
get a comparison done on 5.7.1...to web * or first class ( Mac)?
Rusty Tucker: we're planning a
sysop get-together if you'll be there and are interested
Jim Leary: no....I went to the NY
version...wasn't too impressed...certainly not enough to invest in a
trip to the other side of the country for pretty much the same
thing
Rusty Tucker: Welcome to the chat
mikael!
Jim Leary: no $ for that :)
Rusty Tucker: Anyone got a email
address for Daryl Hansen ( Maui Mail )?
Rusty Tucker: looks like they've
given up on HDS Web Mail..
Donald McHose: BRB
Rusty Tucker: c-ya Donald
McHose
Rusty Tucker: I tried emailing
him about it, and the message bounced back
Bob Nunn: Haven't heard from him
in a while.
Rusty Tucker: Mikael, are you
coming to expo?
mikael fredriksson: Ill will try
to get to the expo in Boston
mikael fredriksson: sorry no SF
for me...
Rusty Tucker: got it
Rusty Tucker: c-ya mikael
fredriksson
Rusty Tucker: so far so good with
851 and AppleScript
Bob Nunn: Sure like visiting SF..
Cost is pretty prohibitive from this side of the Rockies. Took a day
and drove the Pacific Coast highway. Won't soon forget it.
Restaurants aren't too shabby either.
Rusty Tucker: It would have
crashed by now using 8.5.0
Rusty Tucker: Welcome to the chat
Donald!
Bob Nunn: I am anxious to see if
the FileMaker prob. got taken care of as well.
Rusty Tucker: was there something
in the read me about that?
Bob Nunn: I was looking for it of
course. Something about asynchronous writes fixed?
Bob Nunn: Seems FM would cause an
unrecoverable error under certain circumstance. Mostly how I operated
evidently.
Rusty Tucker: Yes, I see that
now. Could be. That might also affect TeleFinder
Rusty Tucker: since TeleFinder
does asynch writes too
Bob Nunn: I have had less trouble
with my newsgroups processing. Perhaps it helped since I would
occasionally have trouble.
Rusty Tucker: I thought your
newsgroup restarts was PowerKey timing out?
Bob Nunn: Not really sure. Need
to watch it more. I have been having them pull in the wee hours
instead of my heavy traffic evenings as of late. Suspect that
though.
Rusty Tucker: Welcome to the chat
mikael!
Rusty Tucker: yes, esp. if there
is not a Macsbug log
Bob Nunn: Lollipop used to stay
up top. Something changed that as well. 8.5.1?
Bob Nunn: The only things I have
changed at all are the server and 8.5.1 lately.
Rusty Tucker: ? is lollipop the
news fetcher?
Rusty Tucker: c-ya Jim Leary
Bob Nunn: Yes Jim Smiths
Lollipop. Goes out and pulls. Have it set up to pull three smaller
sets rather than one large at once.
Donald McHose: Bob: Do you use
VM? on the server?I have been watching a couple of list serve threads
on the subject.
Bob Nunn: Yes just one over. Have
it on both Headgap and Wang's that way.
Rusty Tucker: what happened to
the POP3 gate?
Donald McHose: Sounds like the
best set up so far. Just the bare min.
Bob Nunn: I started running a
smaller cache than 8.5 recommends as well. Don't know what a POP3
gate is.
Donald McHose: Talking about
Vicoms?RT
Bob Nunn: Finder response "feels"
snappier with the smaller cache. Just the opposite of what I would
think. Daniel suggested it.
Rusty Tucker: he was doing a
gateway to fetch mail from a POP3 account for Mail Server
Bob Nunn: I think he has that as
well. I think he calls it popsicle.
Bob Nunn: Don't have a use for
it. Have a decent ISP.
Donald McHose: If this was for
Jim S , I don't think he had/has a dedicated I-net link.
Bob Nunn: Might be useful for
someone trying to run a system via a cable modem account. I can't
remember who was needing that.
Rusty Tucker: c-ya mikael
fredriksson
Donald McHose: Alot of people
soon I would expect will be looking at Cable.
Rusty Tucker: anything else
before we close up?
Bob Nunn: Fast and cheap. What
about taking out the Thu chat notice?
Rusty Tucker: I guess Dan was
coming by, I missed a lot because of Soccer.
Rusty Tucker: but that's done
now
Bob Nunn: Yep I would show up as
well as Donald but not a large group. perhaps start readvertising it
then?
Donald McHose: yeah Dan was
asking . So Thursday is still an option?
Bob Nunn: Gotta run. Nice being
able to edit Photoshop files while chatting on my little iMac. See ya
Thurs. then..
