Jonathan Paisley: <<joined the chat>>

Bill Gram-Reefer: <<joined the chat>>

Donald McHose: <<joined the chat>>

Ken Sutherland: <<joined the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: <<joined the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: hola!

Rusty Tucker: in tech support right now, brb

Ken Sutherland: howdy

Rusty Tucker: A guy

Bill Gram-Reefer: am i the only one experiencing blinking arrow, red modem cursor and long delays?

Bill Gram-Reefer: forgot, spinning beach balls, to

Rusty Tucker: s reporting a problem where TF reports that the "listen is canceled" any time a call comes in

Ken Sutherland: nope

Jim Smith: No. slooooooow

Bill Gram-Reefer: rusty's new ISDN line from PacBell

Ken Sutherland: hehehe

Ken Sutherland: Rusty, how has the reaction to TF5.6 been?

Bill Gram-Reefer: Rusty, how is the PPP front coming with 5.6.2? I've noticed another glitch. As the "You've been Disconnected" message just stays there and seems to freeze up the system. But if I do a force quit it says its FileMaker Pro that quits and PPP just gets started by itself and redials the connection. So maybe Claris and FM Pro are not working so well with PPP as well?

Rusty Tucker: PPP is getting restarted by TF.

Rusty Tucker: Right, Apple did not "timeout" that message.

Bill Gram-Reefer: idiots

Rusty Tucker: Apparently its so important that it must be left on the screen even after PPP is restarted :)

Rusty Tucker: ditto with the "modem not responding" message

Bill Gram-Reefer: so is it possible that FM Pro is also do ing something undainty or was it just caught in the crossfire?

Rusty Tucker: I don't know -- could be

Rusty Tucker: There's 4 users downloading the demo right now

Rusty Tucker: So hang -on it could be a bit slow today

Ken Sutherland: back in a moment

Rusty Tucker: I need to get a mirror for the demo to off load the DL from my site

Bill Gram-Reefer: I'll pay special attention for that, too. So have you gotten on toward getting MailServer to restart too?

Ken Sutherland: <<left the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: I just need to re-link MS with the new comm lib and it will restart too

Bill Gram-Reefer: For those that missed the chat on Tuesday (cough) we discussed MacOS 8.1 upgrade.

Rusty Tucker: No problems out there with modem connections and TF Server?

Bill Gram-Reefer: I'm too afraid to install it

Donald McHose: <<left the chat>>

Ken Sutherland: <<joined the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: 8.1?

Rusty Tucker: I've had no problems with HFS+ either. but you need to use back up instead of relying on recovery

Jim Smith: HFS+ ?

Rusty Tucker: yes

Rusty Tucker: "Sequoia" - it stores files in smaller block sizes freeing up a lot of wasted space

Ken Sutherland: great product

Bill Gram-Reefer: What about Jaz drive driver? If I do backup to Jaz drive from system 8.0 then reformat disk and install 8.1 with HFS+ will it recognize files from Jaz drive?

Rusty Tucker: i don't think so

Rusty Tucker: oh, yes

Bill Gram-Reefer: so what do you back up to?

Ken Sutherland: go on, give it a try

Rusty Tucker: you don't need to format as HFS+

Bill Gram-Reefer: Ken's pissed

Ken Sutherland: me, naw

Bill Gram-Reefer: i see steam, go ahead, tell 'em

Rusty Tucker: you can leave disks as HFS, i do that w/ my system disk

Rusty Tucker: a ZIP is just 100 MB, so it already has small block sizes

Rusty Tucker: Jaz would be big blocks

Ken Sutherland: what does Norton 3,5,3 fix

Bob Nunn: <<joined the chat>>

Ken Sutherland: hey bob

Bob Nunn: Hey sorry I am late. Been having connection troubles I guess.

Rusty Tucker: hola!

Rusty Tucker: See the Macintouch note on "MauiMail" ?

Rusty Tucker: Nice priming for the HDS Web Mail info next week :)

Bob Nunn: nope

Ken Sutherland: what did it say

Rusty Tucker: Something about Free Email services running on Mac OS8.1 and TF 5.6.... He left out HDS Web Mail :(

Rusty Tucker: but we'll fix that next week!

Ken Sutherland: it always happens

Rusty Tucker: The next TF demo ( today ) will have a 1 yr. expiration and include the HDS Web Mail demo

Rusty Tucker: Within that 1 yr. time, a user can preview it for 30 days

mikael fredriksson: <<joined the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: and run TF for 3 hrs at a time during the 30 days

Ken Sutherland: 1 yr.

Rusty Tucker: what FS spec?

Ken Sutherland: ah

Rusty Tucker: After the 30 days are up, it won't run any more

Ken Sutherland: Rusty, did u get the feed online

Rusty Tucker: feed?

Ken Sutherland: nice lag

Rusty Tucker: Yep the pip is way overloaded right now with Demo downloading..

mikael fredriksson: RT: will SI be the only site to download the TF demo from?

Ken Sutherland: ISDN

Donald McHose: <<joined the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: Once i get the new one, I'd like to get a few mirrors setup

mikael fredriksson: Try to get the demo on Mac magazine CD's

Rusty Tucker: How is the HTML WebMail brochure coming Ken?

Donald McHose: test

Ken Sutherland: how may downloads of the demo have there been?

Bob Nunn: ..

Rusty Tucker: I think piURLPhysicalPath should really be just a partial path...

Rusty Tucker: About 100 this week just off the web site

mikael fredriksson: RT did you have problems with the SI bbs today?

Rusty Tucker: The ISDN connection has dropped 2x for short periods

Ken Sutherland: brochure

Rusty Tucker: And the routing seems a little flaky, but other than that the system has been running

Rusty Tucker: I've always been dropping in a full path name.

mikael fredriksson: ok

Ken Sutherland: ...

Ken Sutherland: i don't know about you but I'm getting a lag of around 2 1/2 minutes

Jonathan Paisley: gotta go...

Bill Gram-Reefer: the only people online are in this room, are we all downloading demos today?

mikael fredriksson: me too (sometimes)

Jonathan Paisley: <<left the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: The web site is busy

Donald McHose: Bob: R U going to post this session I have to run 4 the kids again ;-(

Donald McHose: Ken , me too.

Rusty Tucker: Somebody check a trace route to SI, maybe the routing sucks?

mikael fredriksson: RT do you need a file mirror (let me know)

Bob Nunn: Yes I will as soon as I get the logs. I will have time. Would you like to see the route I am traversing. I couldn't get it to answer in less than 10 pings

Ken Sutherland: what do i use to test route

Bill Gram-Reefer: mactcpwatcher

Bill Gram-Reefer: or some such

Bob Nunn: It seems better right now. Perhaps I need to program my MacInTalk to take a breath every now and then he gets choked up reading routes. OT Tool

Bill Gram-Reefer: sorry

Ken Sutherland: i switched off speech

Bob Nunn: Mine goes to Atlanta first and has a couple of more steps

Rusty Tucker: the route seems ok

Bill Gram-Reefer: whew, that's a relief.

Donald McHose: <<left the chat>>

Bob Nunn: I had a couple of N/R's in mine.

Bill Gram-Reefer: I guess we just have top wait until Christmas to get 1 MB/sec DSL service from Microsoft and PacBell

Rusty Tucker: yeah right

mikael fredriksson: I have to go dialing in from a friends Mac...

mikael fredriksson: bye!

Bill Gram-Reefer: so rusty, good timing on the 5.6 announcement me thinks. Everyone's nervous about *9's future looking for backup.

Rusty Tucker: Mayeb I think there is a news drought after MW too

Bill Gram-Reefer: nailed it

Rusty Tucker: Daryl at MauiMail is getting swamped now

Ken Sutherland: *9, is it having problems?

Bill Gram-Reefer: get those ad dollars

Bob Nunn: Reading your TeleFinder finds new life with 5.6 review in MacWeek!

Bill Gram-Reefer: Quarterdeck cut them loose

Rusty Tucker: He thinks he'll blow past the 32000 user ceiling in TeleFinder in 6 weeks!

Ken Sutherland: ouch, nice stress test site

Bill Gram-Reefer: his IP tube will warp before that

Rusty Tucker: probably...

Ken Sutherland: what is UDP

Rusty Tucker: Jonathan & Rusty,

Everything seems to be running fairly smoothly. My Machine froze last

night, which hasn't happened in a while. We are receiving HUGE amounts of

traffic today, due to mentions from MacinTouch.com and macosonly.com. The

TF 5.6.1 server and the HDS plug-in seems to be able to handle the many

sign-ups and traffic very well. C-NET seems to be interested in the service

as well.

I have made many updates to the Web Site last night, with more information

about the FREE email service. I sure wish the UserManager didn't have a

limit of 32000 accounts. At this rate I will be maxed out in less than 6

weeks! There MUST be a way around this!

Rusty Tucker: :)

Bill Gram-Reefer: so is there away around it?

Rusty Tucker: The way around it is to get a -bunch- more TeleFinder/HDS free mail sites up!

Ken Sutherland: wow

Ken Sutherland: well rusty, can you hack the 32000 limit in less than 6 weeks

Bill Gram-Reefer: send me a biz plan

Rusty Tucker: Like you say, his ISP will warp once he gets near using 32K users :)

Bill Gram-Reefer: probably get sued first

Rusty Tucker: niiiiiice

Rusty Tucker: I'd do it if I still had the T1

Rusty Tucker: We need to get AMUG to setup a free mail site too

Rusty Tucker: I don't know if Sunflower or MacConnect will be interested

Bob Nunn: Has AMUG put their TeleFinder Server back up?

Ken Sutherland: Jon and I am talking about the limit, we think we have a fix to get past the 32000

Bill Gram-Reefer: RT, I just purchased what I think is the first and only web site promotion software available on Mac www.sitepromoter..gonna check it out. It's supposed to register with 150 top site and then do stuff to push you up to top 10 percent

Rusty Tucker: cool!

Rusty Tucker: i heard something about that

Rusty Tucker: The limit is imposed by ListManager

Bill Gram-Reefer: they say having your site at top of lists is just as important as online advertising at best sites (like in your case MacinTouch, etc.)

Bill Gram-Reefer: It can do unlimited sites so I'm gonna beta test it and keep you posted.

Ken Sutherland: run more than 1 user manager, you will also need to run HFS+ for folder limit

Rusty Tucker: course if everybody uses it.... well ya know

Bill Gram-Reefer: that is test it on some of my user sites here

Bill Gram-Reefer: yeah, well raise the price..just like radio time if you sell out you're selling it too cheap.

Bill Gram-Reefer: anyone in the bay area Feb. 15 is welcome to come to our 10th wedding anniversary

Bill Gram-Reefer: just RSVP # so I can buy enough shrimp

Rusty Tucker: cool!

Bob Nunn: The tenth anniversary is Magnetic Media right. That's what I told my wife.

Jim Smith: Bill: My 35th will be the 14th Feb.:)

Bill Gram-Reefer: tin

Bill Gram-Reefer: valentine groom

Jim Smith: Lots of reminders..

Bill Gram-Reefer: we eloped and beat the valentine's day rush at Tahoe so it's actually the 13th

Bob Nunn: The 20th is CPU's. That's what I got her.

Bill Gram-Reefer: aluminum is modern alternative to tin

Bob Nunn: I think the 25th will be DVD?

Bill Gram-Reefer: seems you have to wait until the 50th to get bandwidth

Bob Nunn: Satellite Access for the 50th

Bill Gram-Reefer: make a list Bob, that'd be good for UseNet humor list

Jim Smith: I am giving her a new printer. heehee

Bill Gram-Reefer: that's just as bad as my giving Aileen a digital camera for Christmas

Rusty Tucker: I gotta run

Bob Nunn: I guess I had better run. Mr. Wang of Wang's Int. is standing outside my door. See ya next week. Will have the logs up as soon as I get them.

Bill Gram-Reefer: me too...bye guys

Bob Nunn: <<left the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: see ya
