From Spider Island: Rusty Tucker,

Sysops: mikael fredriksson, Bob Nunn, Bob Wright, Michael Davidson, Jim Smith, Kevin Shearon, Donald McHose

mikael fredriksson: <<joined the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: <<joined the chat>>

Bob Nunn: <<joined the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: hi Bob

Bob Nunn: Hey!

Rusty Tucker: so what's the good news?

Bob Nunn: Mapped in my IP addresses for my system. Thanks Mikael for your note on that.

mikael fredriksson: :)

Bob Wright: <<joined the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: Hi BW

Bob Wright: greetings, RT!

Bob Wright: I see you fixed the PPP connection problem with 5.6.2 :)

Michael Davidson: <<joined the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: I think so... when PPP goes down, TF should bring it back up.

Bob Nunn: Will I benefit from using it Rusty now that I am on a router?

Bob Wright: RT: If I am running 5.6.1, do I need all of the 5.6.2 programs? TF server, MS and UM, or can I just DL the Frock?

Rusty Tucker: no, it won't kick in when you're linked by a router

Rusty Tucker: unless the ethernet goes down for some reason!

Bob Nunn: So it won't hurt anything either? Going to try it this weekend. Any other changes in .2?

Rusty Tucker: there's also change in the #set command

mikael fredriksson: RT have you mailed any press info to the Apple magazines and to the www news sites?

Rusty Tucker: it wasn't listening to the #if/#if not etc

Jim Smith: <<joined the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: BGR is going to help me put together a release and send it out

Rusty Tucker: should get that done this week

Rusty Tucker: Now that Dec and MW are behind us, we should be able to get some attention :)

Bob Nunn: Good timing. Should be looking for news.

Bob Nunn: Did you guys see Henry Knorr's article on the G3 cards for the 6100-8100's?

Bob Wright: RT: I read the file names wrong...FReC is just the MS....so do I get MS or MSFreC.sea?

Jim Smith: BN: where?

Bob Wright: I am assuming just the MS, not the FReC

Bob Nunn: MacWeek. Exciting news for us old mac users.

Bob Wright: BN: wasn't that in MacWorld?

Bob Nunn: Nope well maybe. All Ziff Davis anymore right.

Bob Wright: I think they had a G3 article in MacWorld, too

Rusty Tucker: you want TeleFinder v5.6.1.sea the 20 Mb version to get everything.

Rusty Tucker: it includes all the new s.w and docs

Bob Wright: RT: but don't I want to get 5.6.2?

Rusty Tucker: I may hang on to my 7100 and 6100 now :)

mikael fredriksson: will you make a CD of the 5.61?

Rusty Tucker: get the 5.6.2 beta if you're on a PPP link

Rusty Tucker: Yep, 5.6.1 is on CD now

mikael fredriksson: (I made my own 5.61 CD here at work)

Rusty Tucker: Hopefully my ISDN link will be up this week

Rusty Tucker: I think I will be using the Livingston Router to set it up. Seems to have what I need.

Rusty Tucker: I still need to find out how the PPP should be handled with it though. The 3Com impact has PPP built in.

Rusty Tucker: And the router's Asynch port wants to do PPP too...

Rusty Tucker: Seems like that may be a problem, maybe I will need to disable PPP in the modem?

Bob Nunn: Gives me an Ice Cream headache thinking about stuff like that. I usually end up trying everything and eliminating things one at a time.

Rusty Tucker: I have a feeling its not going to work unless I get a Netopia or a Livingston ISDN card.

Bob Nunn: I never really understood that my ASCEND box was a computer itself. It maintains the link no matter what the machine it is hooked to does.

Michael Davidson: I have a dumb question; what is FReC?

mikael fredriksson: <<left the chat>>

Rusty Tucker: Final Release Candidate

Michael Davidson: thanks

Rusty Tucker: yep its just a little UNIX box

Bob Nunn: I want the Mac version of it. Setting it up was only accomplished due to the guy telling me what to set mostly.

mikael fredriksson: <<joined the chat>>

Michael Davidson: Rusty, is there a way to have TF Server come to the foreground every (user set) period?

Michael Davidson: I guess I am asking for that as an optional setting.

Rusty Tucker: There was a script that did that at one time

mikael fredriksson: I think that you can use CRON or OAT

Rusty Tucker: You could schedule it using Mail Servers scheduler

Michael Davidson: OAT does it.

Rusty Tucker: BN you have an Ascend 50/75/85?

Kevin Shearon: <<joined the chat>>

Michael Davidson: I guess I could use Mail Server, what a neat idea....you could also have that MS idea implemented by having as that as one of the pop up thinks in MS

Bob Nunn: 85. Wanted to ethernet link my other machine.

Bob Nunn: Nice hopping on it and having my ISDN available.

Rusty Tucker: Probably just telling Mail Server to Launch TF Server would also bring it to the front

Bob Nunn: Even better idea! No script.

Rusty Tucker: Doe the 85 have 4 10 base T ports?

Rusty Tucker: and 32 modem dial up ports?

Rusty Tucker: 2 i mean

Bob Nunn: I think so. Didn't pay much attention since it had more than I needed. 2 dialups yes.

Bob Nunn: You can call Murray 22075 at MacWhse and tell him you want the corporate disc.

Kevin Shearon: <<left the chat>>

Bob Nunn: Never pay list for anything.

Jim Smith: Question: With TF Win95 user; do they get long file name?

Michael Davidson: Rusty, if the MS idea about bringing TF Server to the front works, could you add a pop up item (like you have for Lollipop) to the MS scheduler?

Bob Wright: RT: I had to step away and missed what you said about DL'ing 5.6.1 or 5.6.2. Any chance of a repeat?

Donald McHose: <<joined the chat>>

Bob Nunn: I run mine from the preference file but I had to save out a script as an application. Rusty could you change MS to where it would let us load files as well. It only allows apps now.

Michael Davidson: Make the script an app, Bob...assuming I know what you mean

Jim Smith: I will 2nd that (BN).

Michael Davidson: just save it as an applet

Bob Nunn: I do. But if I could just load the pref I would have to. You see I have my newsgroups saved out in pieces so I run small chunks frequently.

Michael Davidson: o, like for different setups using lollipop

Bob Nunn: I run my mac group several times per day. My other computer less often. my misc. even less frequently. Have 3 prefs files.

Bob Wright: saved out in pieces?

Bob Wright: oh I see now :)

Michael Davidson: each setup is in a different preferences file

Bob Nunn: Right. It doesn't bog down the connection as long.

Bob Wright: Do you suck a lot of news, BN? I have ISDN and I suck everything at once several times a day

Bob Nunn: The ISDN does make it better. I don't mind logging on now while it is running.

Michael Davidson: groovy...so you want MS to allow scheduling docs as well as apps

Bob Nunn: Yes. I could eliminate the scripts on Lollipop as well as Retrospect. I back my server up the same way in pieces.

Michael Davidson: I have a hack question that might be worth pursuing, but I need a little info

Bob Wright: BN: how many newsgroups do you provide to your site?

Bob Nunn: Haven't counted. All the Mac, BE, Next, Amiga, Commodore, and an odd lot of misc.

Michael Davidson: when I want to Link to e.g. User Manager and the dialog comes up with all possible User Managers running, where are those settings at in the app

Michael Davidson: That is, how do I make an app be of the type that when I call up Link to User Manager, the app shows up in the list

Rusty Tucker: BW - 562 is mainly for PPP users

Rusty Tucker: For AppleScript you'll need to same them as Apps, Mail Server doesn't run the interpreter

Bob Wright: RT: oh I see....people who connect to the net via ppp :)

Michael Davidson: by PPP users, do you mean by sysops who use PPP dial up accounts to connect to the net periodically?

Rusty Tucker: no, if you use PPP for a full time connection to your server

Rusty Tucker: If PPP goes down, previous versions of TeleFinder did not detect this

Michael Davidson: ok, thanks about PPP....but, not clear about the link thing yet

Rusty Tucker: 562 detects it, and restarts PPP

Rusty Tucker: In the linking it will come up with the current UM selected

Bob Wright: RT: do the problem I had last week where a user was stuck online via TCP/IP, but was not detected, is not corrected with 5.6.2, right?

Bob Wright: do = so

Michael Davidson: How do I make an app of a type that show up in one of the dialogs that appear when you use a Link To command?

Donald McHose: LAN police caught me..gots to run ;-(

Donald McHose: <<left the chat>>

Bob Wright: haha

Bob Nunn: Anybody running the new Suzie?

Michael Davidson: I am trying to get Server to work with a commercial email program (Emailer) by way of AppleShare. That's why I keep asking...can somebody help me?

Bob Wright: Can someone who uses automatic registration please explain a little how that manage that? :)

Bob Nunn: I use my logs and the SI UM plug in to manage mine.

Bob Wright: BN: But how many different access groups do you have?

Bob Nunn: 6 total only 3 main ones.

Bob Wright: so when they first log in you give them a "temporary" level?

Rusty Tucker: maybe BW

Bob Nunn: Yes. Low level can't do much, can't post much.

Bob Nunn: Not much time. If they fill out the app right they get good user.

Bob Wright: I am just trying to see if I can handle my new users easier.....if I allow automatic registration, how hard is it going to be to import those new users into 75 different access groups?

Rusty Tucker: How is TF going to work with Emailer? Emailer does not understand any of TF's ApppleEvents as far as I know.

Michael Davidson: POP3 rusty

Rusty Tucker: So why would you link to it?

Michael Davidson: I just need Server to be of the right type app to appear in a link to dialog box.

Michael Davidson: I think

Michael Davidson: So I was hoping to see if I could use Resedit to add a resource in TF Server so it shows up in a Link to dialog box.

Michael Davidson: Then, by way of AppleShare only, emailer could be used for email

Rusty Tucker: Its not going to work that way

Michael Davidson: :(

Rusty Tucker: When you link to a program "as user manager" it means that TF Server is going to send that program apple events to find out about users

Rusty Tucker: Emailer is not going to respond.

Rusty Tucker: I think you want Emailer to be a gateway?

Michael Davidson: Well, that's not exactly what I want. I am not actually sending apple events

Michael Davidson: No, I have made Emailer a POP 3 gateway though, but that's not what I mean here

Michael Davidson: I just want Server to show up as a type that allows it to be chosen in one of those link to type dialogs.

Michael Davidson: I have reason to believe that an app can show up in different link to dialogs

Rusty Tucker: Sure, but only certain apps will work once selected.

Michael Davidson: That is, the link to dialogs don't necessarily look at the Creator code, but some other resource to find if that app is running

Rusty Tucker: it looks at the creator code.

Michael Davidson: Ok, it prob won't work, but I still am curious, where is the resource located that allows an app to show up in those link to dialogs

Rusty Tucker: Then the OS scans the list of active processes to fill in the list

Michael Davidson: Are you sure about the Creator Code, I may be wrong, but I think it could be otherwise

Rusty Tucker: Absolutely sure about that.

Jim Smith: RT: In MacOS is AppleEvent the only way for Application to talk to each other?

Michael Davidson: Ok, then how does Communigate pretend to be an Emailer Server?

Rusty Tucker: ?

Michael Davidson: That feature of Communigate, the ability to use Emailer (and maybe Eudora) as the pop 3 user mail program over AppleShare only, should be implemented into Server, especially if it's easy to implement.

Rusty Tucker: I haven't seen that, you'll have to explain.

Michael Davidson: I'll have to get the relevant doc for you to look at....if you could implement it easily, it would be great for businesses with lots of local email users.

Rusty Tucker: JS -- Apple Events run over PPC which is the low level program to program communication over AppleTalk.

Rusty Tucker: Sounds like its doing POP3 over AppleTalk.

Michael Davidson: yes

Rusty Tucker: In that case they probably register an ADSP stream on the AppleTalk network with the correct signature.

Rusty Tucker: If the program linking dialog is coming up, they're probably using PPC.

Michael Davidson: I don't think it uses ADSP, but somehow, he can use emailer with his Pop3 server over AppleShare only

Michael Davidson: what is ppc

Rusty Tucker: And registering a special non-appleevent port.

Michael Davidson: Wouldn't it be nice for TF Server to allow local users to use Eudora or Emailer and get their email that way?

Rusty Tucker: well guys gotta run now

Rusty Tucker: Eudora does not support it.

Michael Davidson: I'll try to find and send you the info RT

Bob Nunn: See ya Friday. Bye

Rusty Tucker: If you find any tech info on that, please send it to me! Thanks/
