SOFTWARE FOR THE REST OF US By Dan Gutman "Mac BugMan" won't get the bugs out of your computer, but it WILL get them out of your house. This software package for the Apple Macintosh computer is designed to manage pest control companies. It's manufacturer, Nova Electronics of Riverside, California, also markets programs for landscapers ("Mac LandMan") and septic tank service firms ("Mac PumpMan"). It seems like only yesterday that critics were saying there was no business software for the Macintosh. The machine isn't powerful enough, they claimed. It's a toy. Today, it's hard to find a business that doesn't have a Macintosh program aimed specifically at it. A glance through "The Macintosh Buyer's Guide" (Redgate Communications) turns up these unusual programs for businesses that most people might not even think could be computerized at all... --"Church Data Master Plus" ($1,095, Suran Systems, 627 Deerfield Dr., Versailles KY 40383) Perfect for small or large congregations to organize their membership and financial records. There are other religious Macintosh programs for writing sermons ("Lixegete: Matthew & Luke") and managing a synagogue ("MacShammes Plus"). --"MacLimo" ($1,295, Creative Computer Consultants, 4162 Sluga Dr., Newburgh NY 12550) Manage your limousine service. The computer records reservations, prints trip tickets, keeps track of the vehicle's maintenance history, driver payroll, clients and payments. --"MacLunchroom" ($1,490, T&M systems, 13 E. Southridge Rd., Marshalltown IA 50158) Automate a school hot lunch program. A bar-code reader is included, so you can print labels for each student in the school district and track lunches eaten. The computer will generate reports listing who's eating what, when and spending how much money. --"EquiMac" ($495, Equine Computer Software, P.O. Box 96, Otwell IN 47564) Total recordkeeping for horse owners, trainers and horse farm managers. The software keeps the records for pedigrees, breeding, showing, racing and the buying or selling of horses. --"Want Ad Management Software" ($2, 000, DataWindow Software, 1540 San Andreas Ave., San Jose CA 95118) Or "WAMS." This program handles all the drudge work for classified ads in a weekly newspaper or newsletter-- customer tracking, billing, salespersons, commissions, accounts receivables as well as the layout of the ads themselves. --"Psych-Log" ($995, Mission Accomplished Software, 10615 Bradbury Rd., Los Angeles CA 90064) An office management system for psychiatrists and other mental health care professionals. Keeps patient files electronically as well as the doctor's daily schedule. The computer prints out monthly bills and standard insurance claim forms. There are Mac programs for dental clinics, pharmacies, optometrists, orthodontists and other medical specialists. --"MacPhoto WorkStation" ($125-795, Bit Image Software, 20753 Clarendon St., Woodland Hills CA 91367) Wedding photographers and portrait studios use this program to keep track of appointments, referrals, client billing and how many prints are ordered. There are literally hundreds more. This outpouring of software, more than the RAM or ROM a computer boasts, reflects how well it is being accepted by the business community. --- HOTLINE: Apple introduced the newest member of the Macintosh family on Thursday (the 19th)--the SE/30. The machine runs four times faster than the current SE, according to Apple, and is compatible with both MS-DOS and OS/2 computers. The internal FDHD "SuperDrive" stores 1.4 megabytes on a floppy disk, while the RAM can be expanded all the way up to eight megabytes. The Macintosh SE/30 sells for $4,369- $6,569 depending on the configuration. Current Mac SE owners will be able to upgrade to the new machine, but not until the Spring. Price will be announced at that time. [PRESS RETURN]:
