WHAT IS THE BEST MODEM FOR MY COMMODORE COMPUTER (and how much is it?) By Bob Nunn The answer isn't quite so simple, and depends on the answer to a couple of other questions. Let's start with what you want out of the modem. If you are planning to buy a different computer in the future you may want to spend about 30 to 60 bucks more for a RS232 interface and get a modem that isn' Commodore specific. That way when you buy your new machine as long as it will take a standard RS232 modem hookup then it will work with your old modem. How are you going to use your modem is the next question to ask. If you want it for downloading off MAJOR online services then you'll want as fast as you can get. 2400/1200/300 modems are becoming the standards for use even among local bbs's. 2400 baud is quickly coming down and most all bbs's and terminal programs will be available to support these modems. 300 baud is slow man on the totem so to speak but is the easiest on the pocketbook. They can be found in most retail stores for around $19.95 and used for around $10.00. Compatibility is a very important consideration when purchasing a modem. For a 300 baud the phrase to watch for is 1650/60 compatible. There is a myriad of supporting programs made for the 1650/60 and was the old Commodore standard for a number of years. If you find a 1660 this is Commodores new standard for 300's but there aren't as many programs avail- able. KEEP THIS IN MIND!! For a 1200 baud modem the key word is 1670 compatible. The word HAYES is sometime included but the 1670 is the key and is the Commodore standard. It should also work with your upgrade computer. For 2400 baud modems Hayes compatible is a must. It is best to check with a few friends to see what brands they have had good luck with. Auto Answer Auto Dial is a must and almost all but the worst will have these. Also check to see that it has a phone hookup and the approp- priate cable. NOW for the contraversy. I am going to list what I consider the worst modems to buy and the best. 1. Anchor 6480- low priced 1200/300 hardly any software, is not 1670 compat. 2. VIC modem- is available from Closeout houses but is not AA/AD and is not 1650 compatible. Stay away from all ANCHOR products they have made up there own rules and not much works with it. There is a few new terms out now for the 6480 and so if you've made this mistake there is some hope.
